Book Review: UNDER CURRENTS by Nora Roberts

About the book…

The perfect facade can hide dark undercurrents

From the outside, the house in Lakeview Terrace looks perfect and the Bigelows seem like the perfect family. But the perfect facade hides far undercurrents. Teenager Zane and his younger sister Britt, are terrorised by their violent father until one dark, brutal night when their father’s temper takes a horrifying turn for the worse.

Over time, Zane moves on and builds a new life for himself but a childhood like that can cast a shadow the length of a lifetime. Can Zane ever really be free of his past? Or could those dark undercurrents rise back to the surface, forcing Zane to fight for his once again…

My thoughts 💭 💭💭

First! I love Nora Roberts.

This is probably my favourite book of hers.

Trigger warning: domestic abuse and violence

Nora Roberts captures her readers from the moment you open the book. There’s no doubt about that. She’s brilliant!

Darby starting afresh in a new town. After getting a feel of the place she decides this is where she’ll start over.

Zane Walker is one hell of a guy. He’s been through hell and back and he’s come out stronger.

This book is about new beginnings, leaving the old life and starting over. It speaks in detail of violence and abuse from childhood to adulthood. Are we ever free from a past that was filled with violence? Well read Zane’s story and you’ll see that you can come out better and stronger.

Obviously there was romance and suspense rolled into one. You can always find a book of Nora Roberts with a bit of everything in it.

Loved it! Loved it! Loved! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book Review: the LOST HOURS by Susan Lewis

Thank you to Jonathan Ball Publishers for a copy of this novel for review

Synopsis

A perfect marriage…

Golden couple Annie and David Crayce have it all. A loving marriage, three beautiful children and a thriving family business. Life couldn’t be better. Until the unthinkable happens…

A perfect crime?

A piece of damning DNA evidence has arisen, placing David as the prime suspect of a murder committed twenty years ago. Annie is sure David is innocent.

As the police investigate the cold case, so does Annie. Trawling through her old diaries, she begins to desperately looking for answers. But it all comes down to a few lost hours she can’t solve.

And Annie begins to doubt the one person she thought she knew best…

Her husband.

What I thought 💭 💭💭

I was into it from the beginning. It starts with a scene from 20 years ago. Then we’re in 2019 living the perfect life with Annie and David Crayce.

Imagine having the perfect life. The perfect husband. Three adorable children. Extended family that’s always there through thick and thin. Then one day your whole life comes to a halt and you’re questioning everything everyone does. This is what Annie had to go through.

We are pulled back and forth between the now and the crime that happened twenty years ago. There are quite a few secondary characters which puts you in a position of questioning all of them.

I loved Annie. She’s strong, vulnerable and determined to find the truth. David is a man who has changed his life from the wild past to the now perfect husband.

DS Rundle I was drawn too as well but I often felt that she was using her own past experience and comparing it to David Crayce. She was determined to prove him guilty.

This book is probably one of my favourite books from Susan Lewis. I became a fast fan of hers in a short time and am always looking forward to her books. She’s got a way with speaking to the reader. Getting us involved in the investigation and feeling what the characters feel.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. I enjoyed it. I gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

If you want to solve a cold case. This is a book which will help you play detective.

Can’t wait for the next Susan Lewis novel to be released.

Thank you again to Jonathan Ball Publishers for this copy for review.

Book Review: THE WHISPER MAN by Alex North

“If you leave a door half open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken.
If you play outside alone, soon you won’t be going home.
If your window’s left unlatched, you’ll hear him tapping at the glass.
If you’re lonely, sad and blue, the Whisper Man will come for you.”

Synopsis:

When Tom and his son Jake move to Featherbank, they’re looking for a fresh start.

But this sleepy village has a dark past – fifteen years earlier a serial killer haunted it’s streets. In the days before he struck, his young victims claimed to hear whispers in the night.

Of course, an old crime need not trouble Tom and Jake.

Until another boy goes missing.

And then Jake says he hears a whispering at his window…

Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The only reason I didn’t read it in one sitting was because it creeped me out at night and I love to read at night. So I opted to read it during the day, which helped a little bit.

It’s a story of a boy who is different. A policeman needing to close a 20 yr old case. A dad trying desperately to understand his son.

I loved the characters. I enjoyed the different POVs we got read. Well written.

Definitely on my recommend list.

The Whisper Man received 4.5 stars from me!

Book Review: Vendetta In Death by JD Robb

I received this book from Jonathan Ball Publishers in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis

When a family man is tortured, killed and dumped in front of his home for all the world to see, Eve Dallas knows she is on the hunt for a particularly dangerous killer. But death uncovers secrets and the killer leaves a note revealing the victim to be far from the family man he appears.

As Eve works to link victim and killer, another body is found. Another man with a dark and murky past.

The race is on before the killer strikes again but Eve must wrestle with her demons and her conscience as she decides whether she really wants to protect men who may just deserve everything they get…

Review

Men! Beware! Lady Justice is out looking for revenge!

This was the feeling of this book. It’s my first “In Death” book and I must say I quite enjoyed it. Took me a while to read because life but read it I did. It’s great reading about two strong female lead characters. They’re strong, work together as a team and lift each other up.

JD Robb did a great job of this story. I always enjoy a good crime novel but very seldom find one with a good female presence. Women are usually the victim but, not in this story. Here you’re bound to find women as victim, cop, perpetrator.

If you enjoy a good crime novel, this is a good one to read.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Book Review: The Pact by Amy Heydenrych

I received this book by Jonathan Ball Publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:

What if a prank leads to murder?

When Freya arrives at her dream job with the city’s hottest start-up, she can’t wait to begin a new and exciting life, including dating her new colleague Jay. However, Nicole, Jay’s ex and fellow employee, seems intent on making her life a misery.

After a big deadline, where Nicole continually picks on her, Freya snaps and tells Jay about the bullying and together they concoct a revenge prank. The next morning, Nicole is found dead in her apartment . . .

Is this just a prank gone wrong? Or does Freya know someone who is capable of murder – and could she be next?

Review:

Who is it? Is it Jay? Julian? Kate? Freya? Who did it? The question I kept asking while reading this book.

The story goes back and forth into the lives of Freya and Isla. We learn about what brought them here to this point in their lives. What makes them survivors of sexual abuse.

It’s a story of bullying in the workplace. A story of sexual harassment. A story of how easy predators get away with this type of abuse because they have money and power. Or so they think.

I loved the plot twist at the end!

This book was well written and I’m sure touched something in readers who have experienced this type of abuse in their lives some way or another.

A great read. And I understand why the hype was about. Well done to Amy Heydenrych

Book Review: Always Mine/Always Yours (Roommate Duet #6) Liam & Maddie by Kennedy Fox

Synopsis

Always Mine #1

College parties, beer, and one-night stands—that was my life.

Now, I hunt down criminals, ethically or not, but if no one’s asking, then I’m not telling. Drinking and women are still included, though I can’t seem to forget the girl who almost gave me her virginity. She would’ve until I realized she was too young, and I wasn’t looking to get thrown into jail.

In a twist of fate, we’re reunited, except she’s no longer underage but still equally off-limits. After ignoring her relentless advances, she starts to wear me down. I only have so much willpower when she’s around, running her smart mouth and showing off her impeccable dance moves.

Just when my restraint starts to crumble, my poor choices finally catch up with me, putting us both in danger.

There’s no easy way to explain why I betrayed her, but I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe—even if it means breaking her heart

Always Yours #2

Rehearsals, leotards, and textbooks—that was my life.

Dancing is all I’ve ever known, but when Liam’s problems turn everything upside down, I’m thrust into a world I know nothing about. Secrets and betrayal changed the man I’ve fallen for and he isn’t who I thought he was. Regardless, Liam is all I’ve ever wanted and though I’m struggling with my emotions, deep down I’d do anything for him.

When Liam admitted his true feelings, things finally fell into place. Now they’re falling apart. Saving our relationship is his top priority, but keeping him alive is mine. Corruption and power are their game and Liam is nothing more than a pawn. Playing by the rules won’t end well, but I can’t let him fight alone this time.

Our happily ever after is so close I can taste it, but then it quickly crashes and burns, threatening to destroy us. Giving up on the love of my life isn’t an option, but in the end I might not be able to save him.

ALWAYS YOURS is a slow-burn, intense romance wrapped up in a suspenseful beautiful love story. It’s book 2 in the Liam & Madelyn duet and must be read in order.

My Review

Well now…

I have waited for this duet since I read Mason’s & Sophie’s story MONTHS ago. Then on 7 January 2020, I received my pre-ordered copy of Always Mine and refused to read it until I received the second book. Why? Because I knew that Kennedy Fox would end book 1 with a cliffhanger and I would want to dive into book 2 immediately. And… that’s exactly what happened.

I loved how we got to see how they really met even after getting to know each of these two from the beginning of this series.

Maddie said she was going to break Liam down and boy did she. Liam knew exactly what he was doing with her and it all worked out in the end.

I especially loved how we still got to see the other characters we got to know from the previous duets as well and got to journey with them and watch them grow.

This book had me going through all the feels and I can only imagine what the authors were going through when writing it.

Maddie, the youngest of the Corrigan sisters. Liam the reckless one of the three friends. The just fit. They’re both carefree characters, it made sense that they would end up together. Their banter is hilarious. Maddie and her sassy mouth had me in stitches for the most part, but she had me in tears when she discovers how Liam really feels and the lengths he would go to protect her.

This is a slow-burn suspenseful romance that will have you turning the pages laughing and in tears.

My rating for this book is 41/2 / 5

Kids Book Review: Superhero Gran by Timothy Knapman; Illustrated by Joe Berger

I received a copy of this book from Jonathan Ball Publishers for an honest review

Synopsis

All Grans are great and full of fun, but we know one who can make every day the best… our Superhero Gran!

Gran may not look like a superhero, but she can plan super sleepovers, tells super-funny stories, and she can even put together super disguises!

A humorous celebration of all the amazing things a gran can do, perfect for special grans and their superhero grandchildren.

My Reveiw:

This story is sooooo cute! It’s the story of grandmothers and how great they are.

I’ve been told that it’s a grandparent’s prerogative to spoil their grandkids! In my experience… this is the truth!

This little story explains how super cool grandma’s are and how they do things that mom and dad don’t necessarily do for kids.

I loved reading it and I am sure all children will enjoy hearing about how their grandma is a superhero, because let’s face it, grandma’s are super cool!

My Rating: 5/5
